20 May
It rained the whole day and the skies were grey. Nevertheless our spirits were not dampened.
We took up all the scenic and coastal drives instead. We did the Newton B. Drury Scenic Driveway (lots of massive redwoods that flanked the roads) and the Klamath River.
We also did the coastal drive (8mi, partially paved only) that winds through redwood and also offers breathtaking views of crashing surf and the expansive Pacific Ocean.
There was also this WWII radar station that's camouflaged as a farmhouse and barn (from 1940s). There were high bluffs where we could stop and overlook the ocean too. Many birds can be seen and there were panoramic views of long stretches of the coast.
We then took Requa Rd to the Klamath River Overlook where we can see the estuary (mouth of K. River) from a bluff 600ft above. Whales can be seen though the ocean was too choppy with huge waves due to the stormy weather. We decided we will have to come back the next day, cos it was just too beautiful not to spend more time there.
Below left: the toilets are without sink/ tap (no water) and it is just a hole basically, where the waste will pass deep down into the ground. However, it was v smelly or dirty, surprisingly.

Below right: some symbiotic r'ship with plts? some insects keep making pools of foam on plants all ard this area.

Actually this river has a lot of salmon travelling upstream but not during this time.
Below lft: at one of the overlooks. Below right: ds1 at wt they call the "big Tree".
