Just a short post before heading out to Discovery Centre for ds1's art class.
First, guess you all have heard about the Virginia Tech shooting. Shocking and sad.
Next, it is snowing here again. Can't believe it. I always thought winter and snow goes hand in hand and if it's almost the end of April, and it's into Spring, then there won't be snow. But I guess in real life, nothing is so clear-cut.
Had actually packed away neatly some of the warm clothing but will have to take some out for the trip out later.
Finally, thanks to everyone who tried to help, and those who sympathised! Everyone played a part in making me feel better.
I learnt some impt things this time.
1. Always back up and save more coipies of the same thing. Memory size is never a problem now, so don;t be stingy in saving more copies! I've got CD and DVD-RWs, external hard drives and thanks to Judith, even a 12GB thumb drive... Plus the PC's hard drive itself, I now must be more kiasu and save in every format. haha.
2. Next, I didn't know there were such great software, and freeware to boot, out there... Ok, I visited all the links Yingyun emailed me and what Josh tagged. Then I chose 3 to download. I tried all of them over the past few days, staying up to 3-4am each night.
Wow, yes it did manage to show me all the deleted files! That brings me to the next few things learnt:
3. When files are too big (in this case, my son must have deleted the whole folder at a go, so that's really big, prob in terms of GB), sometimes the files bypass the Recycle Bin and gets deleted directly.
4. The files can still be recovered or undeleted by these lifesaving software, but unfortunately, I need to cease all activity on the PC once I realise my files are missing. I wasn't aware of that, so when files were deleted, say, on Thurs, I continued email checking, internet surfing, downloading of stuff, downloading pics and letting kids surf the kids' sites.
When this happens, my deleted files get overwritten... Or partially unrecoverable. Hence, although I saw the filename on the list of recovered files, when I tried to open them, they can't open or the pics open up to show half a head, that kind of thing. The software did list those as in bad condition...
So the number of .jpg files and .avi files i managed to retrieve that are complete are about 20-30 files only. That's probably little compared to the thousands I must have stored in there, but I am still thankful and happy. Probably cos I thought they were lost forever.
My Disneyland and California trip pics and videos were all wiped out. Sigh, and i didn't put many on the blog posts. Nvm, sometimes things like that will happen...
Ok, now I have got another Q... How to back up my blog? I will be horrified to find it gone or crashed... I intend to let my kids read it when they are grown up, so it's absolutely pertinent to have it saved... Anyone know? Pls tell me... Yingyun, ask your IT-savvy hubby pls... thanks...
K, finally thanks again! gotta go!
rainbows every day, do not worry for the morrow
