Went discovery for art lesson no. 3.

Let the kids warm up and play first... Took similar photos as posted before, but cos I had pics wiped out, I began taking again. (Some pics cannot be taken again, unfortunately, like the Disneyland, San Diego Zoo and ds1's birthday pics).

Lesson 3 focused on an artist who is still alive! :-)
Robert Sabuda... He was born in Michigan and does amazing pop-up art. Visit his website for more craft ideas..
http://robertsabuda.com/

The tr showed us some of his books, so fantastic... He does all the pop ups in his books.
The website includes many "how-to" activities, and you can print the template out to make your own pop-ups.
Above right shows the card the tr did as a demo. Above left is the presentation. The screen is touch-screen one ok, don't play play. First lesson, she let the kids point to parts of a face and drag them to form a face. I thought the kids would be using a mouse, but no, just directly drag or click using finger on the screen.

Above shows one of the books Sabuda wrote and illustrated. It's an alphabet book and every alphabet page has a flap you can open up to display a beautiful pop-up. ds1 was cutting the pop up from the template.
so the steps:
1. Print from website if you are like me, and can't visualise from scratch how the pop up should start from 2D...
2. Kids can cut out if the template is simple enough. Those on website have varying difficulty.
3. Let kids colour/ paint the cut outs.
4. Then paste glitter or whatever you want... like squiggly eyes, puffy paint, collage...
5. Fold along dotted lines and glue to a card or piece of paper. (follow instructions on site)
This is what ds1 ended up with.
Below left: cover page with an insect.
Below right: The butterfly, coloured and glitter-glued.. with some of ds1's doodles and he wanted to write the word "super"... only when i spelt it to him, he wrote the letters anywhere he wanted... :-) It seemed like he had something devouring the pretty butterfly, so morbid (see the jaws?)

We also tried the Picasso cubism technique again, on the kids' photos this time. And I distorted the cut up pieces less, to show ds1 the simplified technique. Although actual cubism, the pieces are more distorted and the effect would be having eyes and ears etc not in the correct positions.
I found that by cutting and piecing appropriately, I could highlight certain parts of the face, eg the eyes in this case... make them longer or bigger...
So I thought, hmm, I can do that to my own full-length pic right? Cut it and paste such that I have a great hourglass figure.... Illusion effect... haha

Above left: when ds2 was 5-6months old. The fatso weighed 10kg already. This effect made his body crooked and head slanted, haha.
Above right: both wearing their bumwear clothes, ds2 about 10 months maybe? and ds1 should be nearing 3yo. Their eyes got bigger...
Btw, I just cut their hair yesterday (thursday). Since it involves a lot of cleaning up for me, I always cut their hair very short, then wait till it's very long to cut again. :-)
I had to cut it indoors cos of the rain and snow.. So I have to lay out big plastic sheet on carpet, later have to clean the sheet, clean up the scissors and comb, then vacuum carpet. Also have to bathe them. My own clothes usually also kena...
I cut dh's hair outdoors last Sat... much easier. Just let all the hair fall onto the grass in our backyard. It's biodegradable anyway, haha. Organic what... Now dh's hair also super short, such that everyone in church commented on his new haircut. :-)
rainbows every day, do not worry for the morrow
